Surge Summary: Modern People are convincing themselves to believe lies on multiple levels – and paying a wearying, terrible price for it. Embracing the Truth, on the other hand, is the only way to enduring peace.

by Allan Erickson

“Let God be true, and every man a liar.”  Romans 3:4

If we consider the depravity of man versus the holiness of God, the gulf separating the two is incalculable.  Our most difficult challenge is two-dimensional: while it is impossible for us to comprehend an infinite God, nonetheless, we assume the absurd, that we can run the show without Him. The gulf is too great: our capabilities too small.

The passage from Romans essentially says the most honest among us is still a liar. We know this is true if, through serious introspection, we detect a lie even when we strive mightily to be honest. We tell ourselves we can drink to excess, cheat on our spouse, cheat on our taxes, lie to our children and pretend to love God, all without consequences. We comfort ourselves believing corruption in government is inconsequential, as are such things as sexual adventurism, poor diet and the belief we’ll do just fine denying or disobeying God. Throughout the Scripture God tells us about our sorry state, the depths of our depravity, and His love which can be our salvation. But our depravity often blocks the Way to deliverance from depravity.

And depravity (dishonesty) run rampant paves the road to hell.

We have deluded ourselves into believing it just does not matter. Our cheer in college in the 70s was: “Big Deal, So What, Who Cares, Why Bother!”  It is reminiscent of the old joke:

#1   Our real problems are ignorance and apathy!

#2   I don’t know, and I don’t care!

It’s all very exhausting. We work so hard trying to prove we are self-sufficient, failing over and over, and we wind up discouraged to the point of giving up. And at the same time we run from the One who can help, if we would simply let Him. Sin enslaves. In our wisdom, we deny the heart of the problem, the ultimate lie.

We have created a world where everything is true which means nothing is true. We have stripped ourselves of the ability to discriminate between truths and lies. Ultra relativism is bad enough when it yields chaos. Yet when it matures into fascism (wokeism), it comes with a lethality we cannot escape.

Here is a sampling of ‘truths’ blossoming from the garden of woke cancel culture:

>God is dead, the devil does not exist.

>All white people are evil.

>All people of color are saints.

>Anyone can choose from 54 genders.

>Anyone can violate God’s laws without consequence.

>The real bad guys are all those who disagree with me.

>The entire Constitution is invalid because old white slavers wrote it.

>America is the worst of all nations.

>It is legitimate using children as sexual toys.

>Infants are not human. They can be aborted after birth, and it is called healthcare.

>Men are toxic.

>Nothing is true or false. Only you can decide what is true or false.

>You can be your own god especially with the help of artificial intelligence.

Can anything good come from these beliefs?  Embracing them we inevitably descend into a hell of our own making, where all is hate, violence and misery made worse by our good intentions.  All systems of belief rely on versions of the ‘good intentions’ impulse. Only Christianity relies on the personification of Truth, the Eternal King of the Universe.

Above, in and through the fray, the Prince of Peace says: “Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”  Matthew 11:28

He also says this Easter, and every day: “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life. No man comes to the Father but by Me.” John 14:6

Also, “You shall know the Truth, and the Truth shall set you free.”  John 8:32

If we want peace, rest for our souls, and eternal life, we must embrace the Truth, repent of sin, and receive the gift of Life.
