Surge Summary: There is some debate among Christians as to the legitimacy of the recent “Asbury Revival”. It does seem to evince many of the traits of a genuine move of God’s Holy Spirit. People need to prayerfully make up their own minds and express themselves respectfully on the matter.
The Word was preached. The Gospel was proclaimed. Worship was primarily spontaneous, a sacrifice of praise offered in the Spirit. Pastoral leadership affirmed. All was done in order.
There was confession of sin and repentance. We witnessed deliverance and conversions. People rededicated their lives. The fear of the Lord — the beginning of wisdom — was evident. It rendered the Joy of the Lord as well!
The entire time was covered in prayer, and continues. It is reported that the revival extended to about 130 U.S. campuses and to various places overseas, and it continues.
The love of God visited us in power and truth. Jesus Christ was present.
Still, there are some who claim Christ but they also claim Asbury was fraudulent. One or the other is true. It was either of God or it was of man. It was either in the Spirit or in the flesh.
God’s people are continuously attacked by various foes — all of them fueled by the enemy of our souls. Some people are merely deceived. But praise God! The battle is the Lord’s.
Apart from Him, we can do nothing.
And if we err with a clean conscience, the Good Shepherd will correct us, not with condemnation, but with the love of God, the conviction of the Spirit, and the salvation delivered to us by His shed blood on the Cross.
I believe the evidence is clear: Asbury was and is a genuine move of God.
Those who disagree are free to do so.
Vile condemnations and slander however are not of God. They are clearly manifestations of darkness.
