Surge Summary: The Scriptures declare a good wife to be the crown of her husband. Here is one family’s confirmation of that promise.

by David Lane

In 1996-1997 I was an assistant to Dr. Jerry Falwell. We lived in Lynchburg, Virginia, but while we were planning to move to California, we relocated briefly back to Washington, DC, in late summer ’97. With four small children in tow, we had to temporarily stay somewhere.

On our way out of Lynchburg, Cindy discovered that she was pregnant with our fourth child. After having given birth to three consecutive girls, she assumed she was carrying a fourth one. It turned out to be a boy. Jackson David Lane was born in Washington, DC, on January 12, 1998, just prior to our move to The Golden State.

With three sisters aged 13, 10, and 2, and a very strong former schoolteacher Mom, excessive levels of estrogen swirled on a daily basis through the home, leaving Jackson with not much of a chance to escape being mothered. Dad, however, now had a junior testosterone partner.

Jackson got a little red bull soft toy named Bully shortly after his birth. Bully became part of the family. At age two, Jackson misplaced Bully and when it was time for bed it could be safely ruled out that he would go to sleep without his best friend.

After we had unsuccessfully searched every nook and cranny of the house, we called our housekeeper, Alicia, to ask her whether she knew where Bully was. She didn’t, so that night Dad and Jackson slept downstairs in Grandma’s room. The next day Bully was found in an old microwave oven outside that should have been in the Dempsey Dumpster years earlier.

In 2004, Grandpa gave Jackson the Home Alone set of movies for Christmas. You may remember that Kevin McCallister, played by Macaulay Culkin, acts up the night before a planned family trip to Paris. Being made to sleep in the attic, Kevin is accidentally left at home as his parents head off to Paris.

When Kevin awakens the next morning in an empty house, he assumes his wish to ditch his family has been realized. Shortly after, two con men, played by Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern, case the place to burglarize it and Kevin is left to defend it.

Jackson watched Home Alone so many times that he evolved into ‘Poody McCallister’. Our home became laced with booby traps. Obscure objects fell down from above when the switch was tripped, and a concealed, makeshift bedroom could be found underneath the stairs of our two-story home.

At 8 years old, Action Jackson talked Dad into buying him a motorized scooter with Paw Paw’s Christmas money. Jackson’s Mom had warned Dad that putting Jackson on a motorized scooter with the levels of testosterone surging through his young body was a train wreck waiting to happen.

In due course, it became clear that Jackson barreling down the sidewalk at 40 miles an hour was the equivalent of a heat-seeking missile looking for its target.

In 2014, Jackson enrolled at Hargrave Military Academy for the summer. At midterm Captain Trickey let us know by email that “Jackson earned a B on the Major Test this week and has a solid A average for the semester. ‘Great job Jackson!’” Brigadier General Don Broome, President of Hargrave Military Academy, wrote us that Hargrave wanted Jackson to finish high school at the Academy because of his potential. But that wasn’t to be.

Due to the removal of prayer from public education in 1962, and the Bible from public schools in 1963, the foundation of the biblically-based culture laid down over time by the American founders is now broken and in a very bad state.

It has become so bad that at a Supreme Court confirmation hearing last April, Ketanji Brown Jackson demurred when asked to define the word ‘woman’. “I’m not a biologist,” she offered as her inane defense.

The moral dangers facing America’s youth are enormous and very real. Dr. Bruce K. Waltke, the 92-year-old and foremost living authority on the Old Testament wisdom literature, reveals that Proverbs warns that every man must learn to deal with two basic temptations: easy sex and easy money.

Jackson graduated high school in 2016 and moved to St. Louis to work for Victory Enterprises. Steve Michael was a partner of the political firm and gracefully embraced the job of mentorship to Jackson. Jackson worked for Victory through his 4 years at Missouri Baptist University [MOBAP]. He began as a field representative, became a field director two years later, and managed his first campaign in 2019.

In a post-graduation reference letter, Jackson received a highly positive endorsement by Victory Enterprises: “The first summer, Jackson knocked on doors day in, day out. Jackson proved that first year he was up to par in terms of effort. The next year, we let Jackson begin to work on municipal elections. He developed into an efficient task manager during this period.

“Following that effort, Jackson was tasked with running door teams throughout the 2018 cycle. This was the first time we had tasked Jackson with managing a group of people and through the cycle, Jackson managed over 100 staffers in 5 states. Lastly, Jackson managed his own mid-level race, St. Charles [MO] Mayor’s race, where he helped lead the campaign to a come-from-behind win.”

Jackson did all this while attending Missouri Baptist University as a full-time student. He graduated in April 2021 and was then hired as Aide-de-Camp to Lt. General Michael Flynn. What a blessing and mentor the general has been.

When Jackson and the general were in August 2021 in Dallas, Jackson asked if he could invite a girl to spend a few days with Cindy and me. Since this was the first girl that Jackson had mentioned since high school, our ears perked up. Gabriella Marie Powell entered our life: a beautiful, half-Columbian, Christian, and senior at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville. Cindy and I were delighted and very impressed.

Two hard-charging, independent young people will now merge as one for the glory of God and the advancement of the Christian faith. The first years will be bliss, but infatuation and the early relationship’s heavenly harmony won’t make a lasting marriage. Biblical marriage is made by God, over and over again, through challenges and adversity. It entails laying down one’s life for the other; unconditionally.

Solomon offered advice on marriage to his son in Proverb 12:4: “An excellent wife is the crown of her husband.” Excellent stands in Hebrew for noble and virtuous. The word ‘crown’ denotes that she is her husband’s most prominent social adornment. It also symbolizes her empowering him to rule.

“Marriage is no light matter,” cautions Dr. Bruce K. Waltke, “the wife either makes or breaks a man in his home and in the community.” He adds that “the proverb assumes that her husband is himself pious and prayerful, wise and righteous, kind and generous, sacrificing himself for her good and not self-serving.”

To Gaby and her remarkable parents, Bryan and Margarita Powell, Cindy and I entrust you with the best we have to offer. We have poured our very life into our beloved son. As we celebrate their marriage, praising God for His unending goodness, we adopt Gabriella Marie Powell as part of our family for His eternal purposes.
