Surge Summary: National Marriage Week celebrates the traditional, husband/wife/family arrangement – and reminds us of the many, indispensable benefits healthy marriages confer on individuals and society at large.

by The Ruth Institute

“The Ruth Institute is delighted to join in celebrating National Marriage Week, February 7-14, by sharing our marriage resources with the world,” said Ruth Institute President, Dr. Jennifer Roback Morse, Ph.D.

“Married men and women are healthier, happier, live longer and are more successful than their single counterparts. But, sadly, in the United States, marriage is declining. We aim to showcase the importance of marriage and advocate for more of it.”

“Marriage is the foundation of civilization, the most reliable social structure for raising helpless bundles of neediness into responsible, caring adults. Children raised by their biological parents, married to each other, are better adjusted, better students and more likely to avoid destructive adolescent behavior, including drugs, alcohol, and crime.”

Morse made this argument in her 2001 book, Love and Economics: It Takes a Family to Raise a Village. She also co-authored 101 Tips for a Happier Marriage, which has translations in Korea, India, and Poland, and 101 Tips for Marrying the Right Person.

“Children are entitled to a relationship with both their parents, unless an unavoidable tragedy prevents it. Everyone deserves to know the identity of their parents, their genetic background, and cultural and social heritage. Lifelong married love protects these legitimate interests of children.”

The Ruth Institute has been in the forefront of defending marriage. Last year, they opened a Marriage Resource Center with testimonials, fact sheets, and videos highlighting the importance and necessity of marriage.

Morse noted: “Falling fertility parallels the decline of marriage. After decades of decline, the United States has now reached below replacement fertility. In 2021, our fertility rate was 1.781, with 2.1 needed just to replace current population.”

Marriage has followed a similar trajectory. While 70% of American adults were married in 1970, by 2018, that figure had fallen to 50%. Men and women are also marrying later in life and having fewer children, all to the detriment of society.”

“The institution of marriage is under relentless attack by the forces of the Sexual Revolution, including divorce, cohabitation, and various marriage substitutes. During National Marriage Week, let us stand in solidarity to support the bulwark of a compassionate society.”

The Ruth Institute is a global non-profit organization, leading an international interfaith coalition to defend the family and build a civilization of love.
