Surge Summary: A declining birth rate augers trouble for nations worldwide. Who will fill jobs and help run society if children aren’t born who can grow up to be productive adults? Some voices are rising a warning about this threat.

Ruth Institute Coalitions Director Don Feder spoke on “Demographic Winter: The Fatal Worldwide Fall of Fertility” March 9 at the VI Annual Ibero-American Congress for Life and Family in Guatemala City.

Rapidly declining fertility, leading inevitably to population decline, will be the crisis of the century,” Feder, who has spoken on this issue in more than 20 countries, reported. “Worldwide fertility – the average number of births per woman – has dropped from 4.7 in 1950 to 2.4 in 2017. Sometime in the next ten years, we will probably be at below-replacement fertility (2.1).”

“Then population decline will set in. Soon industrialized nations will find it increasingly difficult to find workers to man farms and factories, serve as first responders, teachers and medical personnel, and do the dozens of other jobs necessary to maintain an advanced industrialized civilization.”

“Nations like Japan are already losing people. Between 2015 and 2020, Japan’s population declined by 800,000. It’s projected to fall another 25% by mid-century. So many Japanese are dying alone because they have no children or grandchildren to care for them, that the Japanese have a name for it: ‘lonely death.’ An industry has even sprung up to dispose of their remains.”

Ruth Institute President Dr. Jennifer Roback Morse, Ph.D. commented: “Among pro-family organizations, the Ruth Institute is taking the lead in raising public awareness of the perils of declining fertility. Last year, we launched our Demographic Winter Resource Center to provide information on the causes and consequences of an issue that will affect all of humanity in this century.”

The Ibero-American Congress for Life and Family included more than 200 participants, including 80 delegates from some of the largest pro-life and pro-family groups in the United States. During the event, Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei declared Guatemala the Ibero-American Pro-Life Capital.

Last December, Giammattei spoke at the Heritage Foundation on “Strengthening Relations with our Partners in the Western Hemisphere.”
