Surge Summary: Certain storied rivalries in the world of College Football are being pressured into changing the terminology they use because of “wokeness” or “political correctness”. What would the consequences be if a student of faculty member refused to go along with this coercion?
by Andrew Linn
There are many rivalries within college football, but due to political correctness/the cancel culture, some rivalries have been forced to change their names.
The first of these rivalries is between the University of Oklahoma and the University of Texas. This rivalry was originally known as the Red River Shootout (in reference to the Red River that forms the border between Oklahoma and Texas, as well as a reference to the Wild West — which was not as wild as some people thought). But then the rivalry was renamed the Red River Rivalry (and later the Red River Showdown) because the word shootout appeared to be condoning gun violence.
Another rivalry to be renamed due to political correctness is between the University of Kansas and the University of Missouri. It was originally referred to as the Border War. Such a name was a reference to the Bleeding Kansas days prior to the Civil War (in which pro-slavery factions from Missouri clashed with anti-slavery factions in order to determine whether Kansas should be a free state or a slave state). The name was also a reference to guerrilla warfare during the Civil War, in which Union-affiliated Jayhawkers from Kansas would launch a series of raids into Missouri, while Confederate-affiliated bushwhackers from Missouri would launch a series of raids into Kansas. But in 2004, the name of the rivalry was changed to Border Showdown, because it was considered inappropriate to name the rivalry a war due to 9/11 and ensuing events around the world. “Ensuring events” may have been a reference to Operation Iraqi Freedom. Such a name change resulted in much criticism.
Yet another rivalry which fell victim to political correctness is between the University of Oregon and Oregon State University. Originally referred to as the Oregon Classic and the State Championship Game, the rivalry became known as the Civil War. But due to the cancel culture of recent years, the name was dropped since there are those who view the American Civil War as a war to preserve slavery. Never mind the fact that the American Civil War played a role in ending slavery, or the fact that the rivalry’s name had anything to do with the American Civil War.
In regards the name changes of these sports rivalries, I wonder what would happen to anyone who refers to these rivalries by their politically incorrect names. Would a student attending the University of Oklahoma or the University of Texas whose uses the term Red River Shootout risk being expelled? Would any faculty or staff at the University of Kansas or the University of Missouri be at risk of losing their job if they used the term Border War? Would a reporter referring to the rivalry between the University of Oregon and Oregon State University face the wrath of the cancel culture, even to point where that reporter’s boss was pressured into firing that reporter?
